In theory diet coke is supposed to have less sugar and be healthier than regular coke. In actuality, it is more toxic. Through the years Coke has successfully marketed it’s low calorie diet sodas as the preferred option. As consumers we have bought this concept hook line and sinker. Practically every time I go to restaurant, I witness people ordering a boat-load of overly processed sugar-laden, high calorie, saturated fat meals. Only to complete the order with a diet Coke.
According to the CDC, 20% of the US population age 2 and up drink a minimum of one diet soda a day. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db109.pdf. By no means does drinking a diet Coke erase the unhealthiness of a meal. I’m sure if you think back you’ve probably been witness to the same. The truth is, removing sugar and replacing it with artificial additives does not improve your risk for developing health issues. In fact, drinking diet sodas as little as one a day places you at a higher risk of stroke, metabolic syndrome, and weight gain.
Here are the Top 4 Reasons You Should Never Drink Diet Soda;
Diet soda is a complicated chemical mix of carbonated water, sugar, dye, aspartame, and artificial flavors that causes dehydration. Drinking diet soda does not quench your thirst as it is filled with indigestible minerals and salts. Once you drink one, it leaves you hungry and craving more. Unlike water, which quenches your thirst and suppresses hunger.
It is no coincidence that people can have an addiction. In fact, Coke has a history of adding highly addictive ingredients. Did you know that they originally added cocaine to create an instant addiction. Hence forth the name “Coke Cola.” As time progressed, and restrictions arose Coke was forced to remove it’s powerful ingredient. But, where there’s a will there’s away. As time progressed Coke replaced cocaine with a chemical additive that’s just as addictive, Aspertame.
An artificial sweetener that is commonly known as Nutri-Sweet and Equal. Diabetics frequently use artificial sweeteners to limit their sugar intake, as Aspertame is 200 times sweeter than sugar. In theory, it seems like a logical idea. But once digested every chemical compound is broken down into yet another compound. Aspertame is broken down into methanol which is not known to be toxic in small amounts. However, if you drink three or more diet drinks per day over 20 years you are potentially exposing yourself to toxic levels over time.
Where Aspartame Can Be Found
- Diet Soda
- Sugar-free ice cream
- Sugar-free candy
4) Weight Gain
It’s a common misconception that anything diet equals healthy. This could not be the furthest from the truth. You cannot drink non-nutritious sodas and expect to maintain your ideal weight. Replacing “sugar” with artificial sweeteners does not make it any healthier. Don’t be fooled by the beverage industry’s use of the word diet. Subtract sugar and sodas still contains a shit-load of additives. In theory, everything you eat and drink should add to your health.
Drinking diet sodas doesn’t quench your thirst. It simply causes your body to work harder to digest as it doesn’t recognize artificial sweeteners. Sugar is naturally found is fruits and other produce. Therefore, your body easily recognizes it and is able to digest it with ease. Artificial sweeteners and other additives are a different story. The body doesn’t recognize is so it still processes it as if it were natural sugar. This can result in weight gain and other complicated long term health effects such as diabetes.
Keep in mind carbonated drinks that are filled with sugar, artificial sweeteners, syrup, and chemical additives are toxic over time. We as consumers cannot take the easy way out by drinking beverages that are labeled as healthy. Don’t believe the hype. Look and the ingredient list for everything you eat and drink. Don’t blindly trust the beverage industry advertising. Seek to understand all that you consume. The only way to forgo the toxic effects of sugary beverages be it natural or artificially sweetened is to avoid it. The best diet drink is water. Anything that has a high concentration of non-nutritious additives is not ideal.
